Books [17 Nov 2009|09:35pm]
Remember those 2 seconds when I was posting book reviews here? Well, I've been rating and reviewing books on Goodreads. My latest review is for the YA book Fallen by Lauren Kate. Fallen angels are the new vampire, unfortunately there's nothing new about 'em--just remove the fangs (if they ever had any) and replace them with wings. Xas could kick any one of these characters' asses!

Fallen Fallen by Lauren Kate

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Just as vampires are becoming old hat in YA literature, angels have swooped in to take their place in the pantheon of paranormal romance heroes--who knew? I was rather dubious of the whole trend (and still am), but boy, do I love me some Old Testament crazy, so I thought, "Let's see what they do with this." Even with my low expectations, I found this disappointing!

We begin with Daniel Grigori (whose last name gives the whole thing away if you know your stuff), a fallen angel cursed to fall in love with the same girl every seventeen years for eternity. The girl in question is Lucinda a.k.a. "Luce" Price, who has just entered Sword & Cross, a reform school for troubled teens, after the mysterious death of a classmate that she perhaps caused, but doesn't remember. As soon as she sees Daniel, she's drawn to him, and soon feels increasingly certain they have met before, and she'll do anything to try and his secrets.

Unfortunately, Luce is a pretty dumb heroine. She spends the entire book mooning over a guy that is mean to her every chance he gets and then mopes around feeling sorry for herself. That's kind of it. At one point she talks about how she knows Latin and French and had a 4.0 GPA at a top prep school, etc. but she sure doesn't read that way! She's not a strong character--she's not feisty, she's not witty, and, worst of all, she's passive. She doesn't do anything so much as things happen to her.

Daniel and Luce fall for each other time after time, but the author doesn't try very hard to make either Luce or Daniel interesting. Did the author think it wasn't necessary to show why they would fall in love with each other? Both were no more than cardboard cutouts. I don't think they even had a real conversation at all before they decided they were each others' ~true love~. I don't care if they've technically known each other for centuries, make them interesting in this incarnation!

I actually agreed with one of the "villains" when she said, "In this lifetime you're nothing more than you appear to be: a stupid, selfish, ignorant, spoiled little girl who thinks the world lives or dies on whether she gets to go out with some good-looking boy at school...I'd still relish this moment...killing you." I don't think that's supposed to happen.

Some other things:
*The climactic battle--which had no real build-up--takes place off-screen!
*The "villain" wasn't threatening and came off more as a simpering monologuer rather than clever or creepy. And he wore gold eye shadow.
*People did not smile in pictures in 1854, among other things!
*How are some fallen angels on the "good side" and others aren't? Fallen angels already chose Satan over God, no?

There are just so many interesting things an author could do with this subject, but it's so flat. There's just not enough of the mythology here to make it worth my while.

Oh, but I do like the cover. And I'll still recommend this to girls who liked Twilight...because it still manages to be better than Twilight.

Writer's Block: Taking It Personally [26 Feb 2009|08:10pm]
[ mood | okay ]

Have you ever taken a personality test like the Myers-Briggs or Enneagram? If so, did you agree with the results? And what was your type?

I did when I was in high school for a psych. class. I think I was INTJ? I remember thinking the result sounded about right. I don't know whether I would get the same result if I took the test now (probably not).

[ mood | anxious ]

Waah! I'm so excited to see my parents! This will be interesting to say the least. I think we'll have to do a lot of the work and show them around and all that, so I'm hoping it won't be a disaster, hehe. I promise to write a huge entry when we get back, as I'm sure I'll have plenty to talk about...and I'll be bored as hell.

P.S. Why is everyone studying abroad without my knowledge???

How many have your name?

That's pretty sweet...there aren't many who share my name (first and last). However, my last name is statistically 26th most popular and the first 800th!

Hey, look what I got for $2.67:

:)Collapse )

The Japanese don't like used goods, so all the used kimono are up for grabs ^.^ This one probably is only worth $2, but, hey, I liked it! I think I'm going to go back to get some more! Oh, crazy Japan and it's weird pricing...3 apples cost more than this.

Got to study kanji now, but I felt like updating (a little).

Newsflash: I finally learned how to do this: ♥!

I also just noticed today that I can see Hikone castle out my window! Yeah, took me that long! Liz and I rode around Hikone for hours yesterday and it was nice seeing more of it, but it was very hot and humid and I was sweating buckets. I never found the bookstore we were looking for so I couldn't buy anything fun, but it gives me something to do later this week, ne? Lindsay (my roommate) and I cleaned a little because who knows how long this place has gone without it....and it was pretty gross. We even had to go wash our trashcans because they smelled. Yes, the trashcans themselves smelled >.< But now I feel a little better knowing that things are slightly cleaner!

I like Hikone so far. I think if you're not going to be in a big city, it's a good place to be. Also, it's pretty centrally located between Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka and all those places so it's convenient for a day trip. But for right now, there's plenty to do here, so I'm set for a while.

Actually, I'm excited! At this point, the biggest hurdle is the getting there, and I'll worry about all the rest (placement test!!!) once I get there. But it's fun thinking about how all the K people are jetting all over, and really, we're all in the same boat.

So I just watched Good Night, And Good Luck...all I can say is that every movie but Crash deserved to win! It was a really good movie. It had great dialogue and just...high brow. Still bitter. I'll get over it eventually. Maybe.

    Oy Gevalt! [22 Feb 2006|06:01pm]

Can it be spring break yet? 8th week sucks, winter quarter sucks, and today sucked. In Japanese, I feel like a complete idiot because I can't do transitive verbs, and I still don't get particles (couldn't get them in French, and apparently I don't get them now). Not only that, I can't read aloud in Japanese! I'm all slow and stilted and generally sound stupid. It's weird because I can't read aloud in English either! Obviously reading to myself is fine, but when I have to read aloud I get all cottonmouth-y and screw up words and stuff. Does anyone else have that problem? I'm not enjoying my classes. Japanese went downhill. I like the language...just, I don't know. The class itself hasn't been as enjoyable as in the past. International politics is really interesting, but I'm not crazy about it. I don't get excited about going to it. Mostly though, I don't like chemistry. It's not a major's course, but it's boring as hell. I'm just realizing how much I want this to end for a while, and even then we only get a measly week off. In short, all of today I've felt like a first-rate ass. I guess this is just one of those inevitable no good really bad days. I really don't want to go to Lincoln tomorrow.
